Bangladesh: Father Gomes ordained as auxiliary bishop of Dhaka Archdiocese

On May 3, Father Subroto Boniface Gomes received his ordination as auxiliary bishop of the Dhaka archdiocese at St. Mary's Cathedral in Ramna, Bangladesh.

Around 2000 attendees, including eight Catholic bishops and 200 priests and nuns, attended the event, demonstrating Bishop Gomes's ordination's widespread support and significance.

Archbishop Kevin Randall, Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh, Md. Faridul Haq Khan, State Minister of Bangladesh's Ministry of Religious Affairs, Cardinal Patrick D'Rozario, CSC, and all eight diocese bishops attended this ceremony.

In his inaugural address, Bishop Gomes expressed his profound dedication to spreading the Word of God and stressed the importance of unity and support within the Catholic community. 

He humbly requested the community's prayers for him and the Church in Bangladesh, envisioning a society bound together by beauty and solidarity.

Acknowledging his limitations, Bishop Gomes expressed gratitude to the Almighty Father and Pope Francis for entrusting him with his new role. He believed in the vital role of prayers, sacrifices, and support from the faithful in fulfilling his mission.

Archbishop Bejoy N. D’Cruze, OMI of Dhaka, delivered a sermon praising Bishop Gomes's exemplary service as a priest, highlighting his administrative and pastoral skills.

He commended Bishop Gomes's simplicity, prayerfulness, and compassion, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the Dhaka Archdiocese.

State Minister for Religious Affairs Faridul Haq Khan commended the activities of the Bangladesh Christian Church and extended congratulations to Bishop Gomes, wishing him good health and a long life.

Archbishop Kevin Randall, the Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh, emphasized the importance of Bishop Gomes's ordination as a sign of Pope Francis' spiritual closeness to the Church in Bangladesh.

He said that the role of an auxiliary bishop is to serve the pastoral needs of the faithful.

Bishop Gomez was born on November 19, 1962, in the village of Purbapara. He was ordained in 1989, and he has served in various capacities within the church, demonstrating unwavering dedication and leadership.

Before he was appointed an auxiliary bishop, he served as a parish priest, assistant secretary general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Bangladesh (CBCB), and spiritual director of the Holy Spirit Major Seminary. -Nikhil Gomes
