Indian Priest Named to Organizing Committee for Benedict XVI’s Centenary Celebrations in 2027

Fr. Thomas Vadakkel appointed to the International Committee for Pope Benedict XVI’s centenary celebrations.

The Vatican's Joseph Ratzinger–Benedict XVI Foundation (Fondazione Vaticana Joseph Ratzinger–Benedetto XVI) has appointed Father Thomas Vadakkel, an Indian priest, to the International Committee for the celebrations marking the 100th birth anniversary of Pope Benedict XVI.

Father Vadakkel serves as the Secretary of the Office for Doctrine of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI), based in New Delhi.

In preparation for the centenary on April 16, 2027, the foundation has established an international committee to supervise and plan several initiatives aimed at advancing the theological legacy of Joseph Ratzinger–Benedict XVI. These will include scholarly conferences, publications, research projects, and other commemorative events that highlight the late pope’s theological insights and contributions.

The objective is to promote a theology rooted in his writings, one that addresses contemporary challenges while looking ahead to the future of the Church and society.

Pope Benedict XVI was born on April 16, 1927, in Marktl, Germany, and passed away on December 31, 2022, at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in Vatican City, at the age of 95.

Father Vadakkel also serves as the Secretary of the Doctrinal Commission of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC).
