Australia's St. Ignatius Day Campaign Raises Hope for Tribal Children in India

As Jesuits around the world celebrated the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola on July 31, Catholics in Australia were invited to walk in solidarity with disadvantaged children in India through Jesuit Mission Australia's One Foot Raised campaign.

Inspired by St. Ignatius' call to keep "one foot raised", always ready to respond to the needs of others, the 30-day fundraising challenge encourages participants to walk 7.5, 15, 25, or 75 kilometers while raising funds for students at Tenuahi School in Hazaribag, in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand.

The campaign highlights the story of 14-year-old Soni, a student at Tenuahi School who lost her father at a young age. Despite her family's financial struggles, she now has access to education through the support of local Jesuit partners.

"I love coming to school every day and taking part in everything the school offers," Soni said. "After completing my education, I want to become an engineer so that I can serve my country."

Like many children from remote tribal communities, Soni once had limited educational opportunities. Today, she studies Hindi, English, and mathematics while participating in sports, dance, and music.

Tenuahi School serves nearly 300 students from disadvantaged tribal families, providing quality education in a safe and supportive environment.

"The project gives children from disadvantaged tribal families a quality education, practical skills, and values," said Jesuit Fr. Amit Toppo, SJ, of Hazaribag. "Students become more confident, disciplined, and motivated to continue their education, making the school a source of hope and opportunity for the local community."

Jesuit Mission Australia CEO Helen Forde said the initiative reflects the spirituality of St. Ignatius.

"St. Ignatius encouraged us to always keep 'one foot raised,' ready to respond to the needs of others," she said.

"This Feast of St. Ignatius, and throughout the year, One Foot Raised is an invitation to put that spirit into action. Every kilometer walked and every dollar raised helps our Jesuit partners accompany children like Soni with the education, confidence, and opportunities they deserve."

As Jesuit Mission Australia marks its 75th anniversary, the campaign aims to raise AU$75,000 to support students at Tenuahi School.

The challenge remains open throughout the year, with Jesuit schools across Australia, including John XXIII College, St. Aloysius' College, Saint Ignatius' College Riverview, and Saint Ignatius College Geelong, already taking part. Individuals, parishes, and community groups are also encouraged to participate.

To mark the feast day, the Jesuit Mission Australia team walked through North Sydney and across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, joined by members of The Cardoner Network, in a symbolic act of solidarity with students in Hazaribag.
