Bangladesh Priests Renew Mission and Fraternity at National Annual Retreat

More than 200 diocesan priests from across Bangladesh gathered for their annual spiritual retreat from July 13 to 25, renewing their commitment to pastoral ministry through prayer, reflection, and fraternity.

Held in two groups from July 13 to 25 at the Christa Jyoti Pastoral Centre in the Diocese of Rajshahi, the retreat gathered one bishop and 204 diocesan priests under the theme, "The Good Shepherd Priest: Humble Listening to the Holy Spirit and an Open Heart for a Suffering People." The retreat was directed by Fr. Bablu Sarkar.

Inaugurating the first group, Bishop Gervas Rozario of Rajshahi welcomed the participants and expressed hope that the pastoral center would provide a peaceful environment for prayer and renewal.

"I believe this Pastoral Centre will offer all of you a beautiful and spiritually enriching atmosphere for the retreat. It is a valuable opportunity for us to examine ourselves, deepen our relationship with God, and find genuine rest," Bishop Rozario said.

He encouraged the priests to model their ministry on Christ's example.

"Like Jesus, we too must become good shepherds. Just as Christ went out to the people, we are also called to draw close to those entrusted to our care," he said.

At the opening of the second group, Fr. Mintu Palma, president of the Bangladesh Diocesan Priests' Fraternity, emphasized the importance of caring for priests' own spiritual lives.

"Through this retreat we seek spiritual renewal. Throughout the year we devote ourselves to serving God's people, but these four days are especially important for caring for our own spiritual lives. Let us use this time to remain close to God and renew ourselves in His presence," he said.

During the retreat conferences, Fr. Bablu Sarkar reminded participants that authentic priestly ministry must remain centered on Christ.

"Without Jesus we can do nothing. It is not the mission of priests to deepen one another's wounds or to criticize each other. Rather, no brother priest should become the cause of another priest's suffering," he said.

He also urged the priests to imitate Christ's unconditional love.

"Just as Jesus loved others, we too are called to love everyone and listen attentively to one another. We must enlarge our hearts and be willing to reach out to all people," he said.

At the closing ceremony, participants thanked Fr. Sarkar for his spiritual guidance throughout the retreat.

In his concluding remarks, he encouraged priests to strengthen their fraternity through prayer.

"We are all priests, and in times of difficulty we must stand beside one another as brothers. Prayer has the power to keep us united and strengthen our fraternity," he said.

Fr. Bijon Kubi described the retreat as both practical and spiritually enriching, saying Fr. Sarkar's reflections helped participants deepen their understanding of the priestly vocation.

"This retreat has been spiritual nourishment for us, and we are now better prepared to share that nourishment with others by following the example of Jesus, the Good Shepherd," he said.

Fr. Khokon Vincent Gomez also praised the Christa Jyoti Pastoral Centre for providing an atmosphere conducive to prayer and contemplation.

"Our diocesan priests possess many gifts, and the present leadership of the Bangladesh Diocesan Priests' Fraternity is making good use of those gifts," he said, adding that Fr. Sarkar demonstrated the ability of diocesan clergy in Bangladesh to lead deeply spiritual and inspiring retreats.

The annual retreat concluded with a renewed sense of fraternity and missionary commitment, sending the priests back to their dioceses across Bangladesh strengthened in faith and inspired to continue serving their communities with humility, compassion, and trust in Christ, the Good Shepherd.
