Bangladesh: Rajshahi Diocese Welcomes Seven Newly Ordained Priests
Seven deacons from the Diocese of Rajshahi in the northwestern part of Bangladesh were ordained priests in a solemn ceremony at the Good Shepherd Cathedral, Rajshahi City, on November 21, 2025.
The ordination was presided over by Bishop Gervas Rozario of the Diocese of Rajshahi, with Bishop Emmanuel K. Rozario of the Diocese of Barishal concelebrating. The previous evening, the deacons were traditionally welcomed according to indigenous customs, with special prayers and blessings offered for their well-being.
The newly ordained priests are: Father Anu Joachim Gomes, Father Nayan Joseph Gomes, CSC, Father Gervas Gabriel Murmu, Father Michael Hembrom, Father Uzzal Gomes, Father Sonet Theotenius Costa, and Father Albert Cruz.
The ceremony was attended by 68 priests, 38 nuns, 9 brothers, and more than 1,500 faithful.
In his homily, Bishop Gervas Rozario said: "Today is truly a joyful occasion for our diocese as seven deacons become sharers in the priesthood of Christ. They are about to participate in the eternal priesthood according to the order of Melchizedek. As priests, your primary duty is to care for and love the faithful. Become priests every day, begin each day with prayer, and at its close, give thanks to God and seek His strength."
He added, "You must take spiritual care of your flock and intercede for the forgiveness of their sins. Many challenges will come in priestly life, but you must face them and continue the mission of Christ."
Bishop Emmanuel Kanon Rozario congratulated the newly ordained priests, saying: "The Diocese of Rajshahi is truly blessed to have you. On behalf of the Diocese of Barishal, I extend my heartfelt congratulations."
Father Paul Gomes, Rector of Banani Holy Spirit Major Seminary, noted, "In this Jubilee Year, seven new priests are a special blessing for the Diocese of Rajshahi. This year, a total of 26 new priests from different congregations will be ordained in the Church of Bangladesh, reflecting God’s grace in sustaining the mission of the Church."
Father Sushanta Gomes, Assistant Provincial of the Holy Cross Congregation, added: "Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the newly ordained priests. Always strive to love the faithful, and they will love you in return."
Newly ordained Father Michael Hembrom expressed gratitude: "We give our deepest thanks to Heavenly Father for calling us to His vineyard. We also thank all who helped us reach this day. Please pray for us, that we may faithfully fulfill our responsibilities."
