The Catholic Archdiocese of Chattogram in southeastern Bangladesh celebrated the 6th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on July 26 with special liturgies, prayers, and parish gatherings honoring senior members of the faithful.
Inspired by this year's theme, "I Will Never Forget You" (Isaiah 49:15), the archdiocese joined the universal Church in recognizing the invaluable role of grandparents and elderly people in passing on the faith and strengthening families and parish communities.
Special Holy Masses were celebrated in every parish of the archdiocese, where priests offered prayers for the health, peace, and spiritual well-being of grandparents and elderly parishioners, entrusting them to God's loving care. Parish communities also expressed gratitude for their lifelong witness of faith, generous service, and enduring contributions to the Church and society.
In their homilies, priests emphasized that older people are more than respected members of their families; they are living witnesses of the Gospel whose wisdom, experience, and steadfast faith continue to inspire younger generations.
Reflecting on Pope Leo XIV's message for this year's observance, they encouraged families and parish communities to remain close to their elderly members, ensuring they are never isolated but are loved, respected, and actively involved in the life and mission of the Church.
Following the Eucharistic celebrations, parishioners presented flowers and small tokens of appreciation to grandparents and senior faithful as expressions of gratitude and affection. Many parishes also organized fellowship gatherings where elderly participants shared stories of faith, perseverance, and family life, offering encouragement and spiritual guidance to younger generations.
Their testimonies highlighted the importance of prayer, forgiveness, family unity, and unwavering trust in God's providence.
The celebrations concluded in an atmosphere of thanksgiving and joy, strengthening the bonds between generations within parish communities.
Through its observance of the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, the Archdiocese of Chattogram reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of respect, care, and inclusion for older people, recognizing them as treasured custodians of faith whose lives continue to enrich the Church and inspire future generations.
