India: Church-Sponsored Seminar Trains Youth to Engage with Economics, Politics, and Media

Catholic youth join the “Exploring Economics” seminar organized by SYNC at Santhome Communication Centre and Studios, Tamil Nadu, on June 28–29, 2025.

On June 28–29, Synergizing Youth Network for Change (SYNC) organized a two-day seminar titled “Exploring Economics”, aimed at training Catholic youth to critically engage with the key economic, political, and social issues shaping today’s world. The seminar was held in Poondi, in southern Tamil Nadu.

On the first day, Mr. Ravi Bernard, former Member of Parliament and well-known media personality, led a session on Indian and global economies, highlighting the influence of international politics on economic trends. His talk sparked a lively discussion on economic sanctions and the impact of global stock markets.

The second session, led by Professor Sivaprakasham, focused on the theme “Exploring Economics: How Economic Factors Shape History,” offering participants a historical and analytical perspective on how economic forces have shaped civilizations through time.

Mr. Mohan Kumar of Franklin Templeton Investments provided practical insights into mutual funds, asset investment, and financial planning. He also conducted sessions on SEBI investor certification, equipping participants with foundational financial literacy.

On June 29, Fr. M.C. Rajan of the Kottar Diocese delivered a talk on the Indian Constitution and the formation of social movements, underlining the Church's mission to accompany the marginalized and promote justice.

Later in the day, SYNC held its organizational elections, overseen by Fr. Rajan and Fr. Jenith. Mr. Clement was elected President, and Ms. Melba was elected Secretary.

Commenting on the event, Abishek Raja, a participant from the Diocese of Sivagangai, urged fellow media professionals to act as voices for the marginalized. He emphasized that care for the environment must go beyond symbolic gestures and address the root causes of injustice. He praised the event for its clarity, insight, and transformative impact.

SYNC is a Church-sponsored movement that trains Catholic youth in Tamil Nadu in media skills and nurtures them to become authentic voices of the people.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
