India: Darjeeling Catholics Organize Blood Donation Drive to Support District Hospital
St. Andrew’s Cathedral of the diocese of Darjeeling, in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, organized a blood donation camp on May 24 to support the district hospital blood bank facing a shortage of supply.
The program was held at the Cathedral Church Hall in Darjeeling and organized by members of the Cathedral Parish in collaboration with Grace Academy, Siliguri-Darjeeling.
The initiative was conducted in support of the Blood Bank of Darjeeling District Hospital, which has reported recurring shortages affecting patients and local hospitals.
Around 70 people registered for the drive. After medical screening and health checks, 40 donors were found eligible to donate blood.
Church organizers said the Catholic community in Darjeeling has continued to promote awareness about voluntary blood donation and its role in saving lives. They added that similar camps are planned every two to three months, including in rural areas of the district.
Organizers also encouraged young people and parish communities to participate in humanitarian and social outreach programs through regular donation campaigns.
Parish members, religious brothers, students, volunteers, and medical personnel took part in the event and assisted in organizing the camp.
The organizers thanked donors and volunteers for supporting the initiative, describing blood donation as an important act of service for patients in need of emergency medical care.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
