India: Lakhs of Pilgrims Attend 2026 Feast of Our Lady of Divine Grace, Mokama
The annual feast of the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Divine Grace, Mokama, in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, was celebrated on February 1, 2026, with great faith and devotion. The event drew lakhs of pilgrims from across Bihar and neighbouring states.
The solemn Holy Eucharist was presided over by Archbishop Sebastian Kallupura of Patna, and concelebrated by Bishop Alosius Tigga of Raiganj, along with several other priests from the archdiocese and neighbouring dioceses.
In his homily, Archbishop Kallupura reflected on the Christian life as a pilgrimage, comparing pilgrims to mountain climbers who rely on guidance and support to reach their goal. He presented Mary as a constant companion and helper, faithfully leading her children to Jesus. Emphasising Mary’s maternal role, the Archbishop described her as a refuge for those burdened by suffering and loss. He reminded the faithful that Mary, who pondered all things in her heart and guided Jesus in His earthly life, continues to accompany the Church today, offering comfort, hope, and encouragement to persevere in faith.
A Marian procession around the basilica compound added a visible expression of communal devotion. Accompanied by devotional hymns and band music, the procession drew large participation. Pilgrims carried candles and flowers as symbols of gratitude and trust, while the repeated invocation of “Mokama Matha ki Jai!” echoed through the grounds, expressing love and confidence in Mary.
From the early hours of the feast day, the basilica grounds were filled with pilgrims who had undertaken long and demanding journeys, travelling by train, bus, and on foot, offering their fatigue as a prayer. Despite the physical strain, the faithful bore visible signs of peace and gratitude, expressing that simply being in the presence of Mary brought consolation and renewed strength.
The celebration was preceded by the traditional nine-day novena, during which the shrine resonated with Marian hymns, rosary prayers, and moments of silent reflection.
The shrine holds special significance for childless couples, many of whom pray for Our Lady’s blessing to fulfil their hopes for children. As a result, numerous couples join the annual pilgrimage, entrusting their wishes to Our Lady of Divine Grace. The shrine also welcomes devotees from other faith traditions, who come seeking peace and inner healing. This inclusive spirit reflects the universal appeal of Mokama Matha as a motherly presence who offers comfort without distinction, reinforcing the basilica’s role as a place of unity and harmony.
As the feast day drew to a close, many left the shrine with hearts strengthened by grace, carrying a renewed sense of hope and trust. The 2026 Feast of Our Lady of Divine Grace once again affirmed the Minor Basilica of Mokama as a significant spiritual centre in northern India. More than an annual celebration, the feast was an experience of grace, inspiring faith, fostering unity, and offering deep consolation to all who seek refuge in the loving presence of Mokama Matha.
