Northeast Indian Claretians provide aid and medical assistance to Manipur's victims

The Claretians of Northeast India assisted victims of ethnic violence in Manipur by collecting funds from the region's five provinces.

Father Joseph Mappilaparambil, Director of NavJan, said that the Claretians of Northeast India are currently involved in the Relief and Assistance of the suffering people of Manipur through their Social ministry, 'NAVJAN - A PEOPLE EMPOWERMENT TRUST,' a registered Trust in Borjhar, Guwahati, Assam.

As a result of confrontations between Hindu Meitei community members and Christian Kukis tribals, violence has erupted in the northeastern Indian state since May 3.

The death toll has reached more than 100 people, mostly Kukis, and hundreds more are now living in relief camps.

Father Mappilaparambil told RVA that the congregation offered assistance: "First, we provided medical, sanitary, clothing, and food items to 300 people living in three camps in Guwahati."

"For relief works, we work together with all Claretians of India, other Protestant denominations, "Claretian Alumni Association” (CLAAS), and other religious congregations," said Father Mappilaparaambil.

Keeping in mind that over 7,000 people reside in SAIKUL Camps in Khakopi District, he informed other volunteers that all are welcome to work with or contribute to alleviating suffering people, regardless of their religious or tribal affiliation.

He said, "Most Kukis people are refugees in their state and have no support from the government or outside."

On the church and school grounds of St. Claret in Borjhar, Guwahati, on June 4, the Claretians organized a solidarity rally that included an interfaith prayer service and candlelight procession. More than 200 people attended.

On May 9, 2023, the social service branch of the Claretians, "NavJan" (new people), hosted an interfaith and ecumenical gathering that various religious congregations, churches, and religions attended.

With help from donors, churches, and well-wishers, the team distributed relief materials to 100 people on May 11 at Oasis School in Mairapur under Borjhar.

"From there, more people began joining the effort to assist Manipur," said Father Mappilaparambil, who collects orphanage supplies, mosquito nets, biscuits, baby food, and clothing from the public.

In addition, they organized medical centers to aid in the patient's recovery and return to normal life.
