Over 200 Children Receive First Holy Communion at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Islamabad
More than 200 children, including boys and girls aged 10 to 12 dressed in white, received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, on August 16, 2026.
About 800 faithful gathered to attend the annual parish celebration, which was solemnized by parish priest Fr. Sylvester Joseph and assistant parish priest Fr. Navan Mario, OP. The altar and church interior were decorated with fresh flowers, candles, and festive banners to honor the solemn occasion.
Built and blessed in 1979, Our Lady of Fatima Church serves a community of approximately 1,600 Catholic families. The annual ceremony brought together communicants from dozens of surrounding neighborhoods across the federal capital. As the city’s primary Catholic sanctuary, the church stands as a crucial center for spiritual growth and community cohesion within the local Christian minority.
The event followed months of spiritual formation. A team of 6 catechists and 14 Sunday school teachers spent four months preparing the candidates, followed by a 4-day period during which the parish priest conducted oral examinations to assess each child's readiness for the sacraments. These preparatory sessions focused on deepening the children's understanding of scripture, liturgical traditions, and prayer.
Addressing the children on the First Holy Communion Day, Fr. Sylvester Joseph emphasized the spiritual significance of the Sacrament of Confession and the Holy Eucharist. He reminded them that confession cleanses the heart, making it a dwelling place for Christ.
"Receiving the Holy Eucharist for the first time is not merely a ritual, but a sacred encounter with the living Jesus," Fr. Sylvester shared in his message. "By coming to the Sacrament of Confession with a pure heart, you open yourselves to God’s mercy. Protect the holiness of this divine gift, remain faithful to prayer, and let the love of Jesus guide your actions every day."
Following the service, certificates were presented to the children to commemorate their milestone, and they expressed joy and commitment to their faith as they celebrated receiving the Eucharist for the first time.
Parents and parishioners joined in applause as each child received their certificate, creating a vibrant atmosphere of communal gratitude. Fr. Sylvester Joseph and Fr. Navan Mario, OP, joined the parish community in offering prayers for the children’s faith journey.
"We thank God for this beautiful celebration and pray that these children may always remain close to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist," parish leadership stated in a message. "May the Blessed Virgin Mary guide and protect them throughout their lives."
Church leadership extended congratulations to the children and their families, acknowledging the role played by the catechists, Sunday school teachers, and parish volunteers.
The parish team worked tirelessly to organize logistics, coordinate the liturgy, and ensure a memorable, sacred experience for everyone. The event underscores the vitality and faith formation of the Catholic Church in Islamabad.
