Philippines: Reject greed, embrace service, says Cebu archbishop-designate on National Heroes Day

Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy.

Cebu Archbishop-designate Alberto Uy has urged leaders in government, the Church, and society to reject greed and remain committed to genuine service as the Philippines marked National Heroes Day on August 24.

In his message for the occasion, Uy paid tribute to the men and women who offered their lives for the nation’s freedom, saying their sacrifice reflects Jesus’ words about “laying down one’s life for a friend.”

“Heroism is not only about dying for our country; it is about living each day with love, sacrifice, and integrity,” he said. “National Heroes Day is also a call for our leaders to resist the temptations of greed and power.”

The prelate warned that graft, corruption, dishonesty, and self-interest continue to weaken the nation’s institutions, describing them as “moral and spiritual wounds” that burden the people.

Uy also emphasized that heroism is not limited to public officials. He cited parents who sacrifice for their families, young people who choose honesty, and communities that extend care to the poor, protect the environment, and practice compassion as examples of everyday heroes.

“May this National Heroes Day inspire us to reclaim the spirit of courage and sacrifice,” he added. “Let us pray for our leaders, that they may have the strength to reject corruption and instead choose the path of integrity, service, and justice.”

This year’s National Heroes Day carried the theme “Isang Diwa, Isang Lahi, Isang Bayanihan” (One Spirit, One Race, One Bayanihan), underscoring unity as a foundation for nation-building. The holiday is observed every last Monday of August.
