Pope Leo Thanks Gemelli Hospital Staff, Faithful for Support during Hospitalization

Speaking after the Angelus on October 18, Pope Leo XIV thanked the staff of Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and faithful worldwide for their support and prayers during his recent hospitalization.

Pope Leo XIV thanked the doctors, nurses and staff at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for their care during his recent hospitalization and expressed gratitude to those who prayed for him, according to Vatican News.

At the conclusion of the Angelus on Sunday, October 18, the Pope thanked those who had supported him during his recovery.

“I have truly felt your support. Thank you!” he said.

He expressed “special gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and all the staff at the Gemelli Policlinic,” where he underwent surgery on October 13 to remove a cancerous nodule from his lung.

“This experience has allowed me to feel, in a particular way, a closeness to all those who are living through illness or a state of infirmity,” the Pope said.

Pope Leo was discharged from the hospital on Saturday afternoon after blood tests and a chest X-ray confirmed that he was fit to leave.

Before departing, he personally thanked the surgeon who performed the operation, along with the medical and nursing teams, health care staff, the rector of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and the hospital’s leadership.

Concluding his remarks at the Angelus, the Pope said he would gradually resume his activities following the surgery.

“Now that this delicate phase has passed, as you know, I will gradually resume my activities, always with the help of God and your prayers,” he said.

The Prefecture of the Papal Household, which coordinates the Pope’s public activities, had announced before the surgery that all papal audiences through Tuesday, October 20, would be canceled.
