Sri Lankan abbot elected to head Sylvestro Benedictine Congregation

A Sri Lankan abbot has been elected the Superior General of the Sylvestro Benedictine Congregation.
Most Rev. Dr. Shamindra Jayawardena OSB has been elected as the Abbot General (Superior General) of the Sylvestro Benedictine Congregation.
By this election, he became the 119th successor of St. Sylvester Guzzolini, Abbot, the founder of the Monastic Order, as announced by Sylvestro Benedictines-Sri Lanka's Facebook post on May 28.
Sylvestrine Congregation of the Benedictine Order (O.S.B. Silv.) is a Monastic Order of Pontifical Right for men.
In 1231, St. Sylvester Guzzolini, Abbot, founded the monastic order in Italy.
Shamindra was born on January 13, 1972, made first vows on August 15, 1992, and final vows on August 15, 1998. He was ordained a priest on December 21, 2000.
He was elected as the prior abbot of Sri Lanka on November 21, 2013, and was re-elected for the second time in 2019.
He is the second person from Asia to head the congregation.
The Sylvestro Benedictine Congregation is present in Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
