Sri Lankan president congratulates new pope

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake congratulated the newly elected Pope Leo XIV as the head of the Catholic Church with 1.4 billion members.
Writing on his X social media platform, Dissanayake stressed the responsibility that comes with the papacy and wished the pope strength and wisdom in his new role.
The pope’s leadership would inspire and bring hope to people worldwide, sending warm regards from Sri Lanka, Dissanayake said.
Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, is the first American to be elected pope in the Church’s 2,000-year history.
The pope is known for a balanced and moderate view on several issues that affect the church and is firm on doctrinal issues. He also shows sound judgment and attentive listening, like his predecessor Pope Francis.
The election of Pope Leo XIV is considered a significant moment for Catholics globally, and it is widely celebrated, showing the need for peace, interfaith respect, and international goodwill.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
