Tagle Tells Manila Summit: God Leads Pilgrims to Freedom, Not Malls and Restaurants

Celebrating Mass at the 11th Philippine Conference on New Evangelization (PCNE), currently underway in Manila, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, reminded the faithful that God leads His people toward freedom not shopping malls and restaurants.
In his homily, the cardinal critiqued the prevailing consumerist culture, marked by crowded malls and the frenzy of saledays.
Speaking in Filipino on the second day of the conference at the University of Santo Tomas, Tagle recalled the story of the Israelites’ exodus as they prepared for their long journey to freedom from the bondage of Pharaoh.
“A new life, a new land as free children of God,” he said. “That is the gift from God, and He will move His hands to make it happen.”
With heavy rains and flooding affecting Manila and other parts of the country, Cardinal Tagle also offered a special prayer for those suffering due to the weather conditions.
“Let us not abandon them—especially in our prayers,” he appealed.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
