U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen joined religious leaders and community representatives for an interfaith dialogue during a visit to Gournadi Catholic Church in the Diocese of Barishal, southern Bangladesh, on August 10.
The dialogue brought together representatives of Muslim, Hindu and Christian communities, highlighting Bangladesh’s tradition of religious coexistence and the importance of strengthening mutual understanding among people of different faiths.
Christensen was accompanied by Md. Zahir Uddin Swapan, a member of Bangladesh’s Parliament and Minister for Information and Broadcasting.
Also attending were Gournadi Upazila Executive Officer Md. Ibrahim; Fr. Liton Gomes, parish priest of Gournadi Catholic Parish; Fr. Michael Milon Dewri, project and construction secretary of the Diocese of Barishal; and religious leaders representing various faith communities.
During the dialogue, participants discussed religious harmony, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and ways of strengthening relationships among different religious and social communities.
Speakers emphasized that mutual respect, tolerance and cooperation are essential for building a peaceful and harmonious society. They noted that religious values can encourage love, respect for human dignity, justice and a commitment to peace.
Participants also stressed the importance of regular communication and dialogue among religious leaders, saying that such exchanges can help build trust and address misunderstandings between communities.
Religious leaders from the different faith traditions expressed their commitment to working together to promote an environment of peace, human dignity, mutual respect and trust.
Christensen’s visit to the Catholic parish and participation in the interfaith dialogue were welcomed as an opportunity to strengthen goodwill and understanding among Bangladesh’s diverse religious communities.
Participants expressed hope that continued interfaith exchanges would further strengthen religious harmony and peaceful coexistence in Bangladesh’s pluralistic society.
