“Use It, Clean It, Put It Back”: Liturgist Urges 75 Sacristans to Handle Sacred Objects with Care at Mumbai Seminar
“Take it, use it, clean it and put it back,” Fr. Robin Fargose told 75 sacristans representing different parishes during a formation program organized by the Liturgy Office of the Archdiocese of Bombay at Seva Kendra, Dadar West, Mumbai, western India.
The seminar focused on the spiritual responsibilities and practical skills required in sacristan ministry, particularly the proper care and handling of sacred objects and liturgical linens used during the celebration of the Eucharist.
Fr. Fargose, emphasized that serving at the altar is not merely a duty but a calling and a ministry that requires dedication, sincerity, discipline and reverence.
He reminded participants that preparing their hearts through prayer, humility and devotion is as important as preparing the altar for Mass. He also stressed the importance of treating sacred objects with care and respect.
His practical instruction, “Take it, use it, clean it and put it back,” highlighted the orderliness, accountability and attention to detail required in sacristan ministry. He also explained the proper care of sacred linens, including purificators used during the celebration of Mass.
The gathering began with a prayer service led by Sr. Rosely FSP, who invoked God's blessings on the participants and the day's proceedings. Fr. Savio DeSales, secretary of the Commission for Liturgy and the program's principal organizer, welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of their ministry in parish life.
The formation session was followed by games and recreational activities conducted by Clifton, providing an opportunity for sacristans from different parishes to interact, share experiences and strengthen their fellowship.
Sr. Rosely, the program coordinator, said the workshop was organized to support, guide and enrich those who serve behind the scenes in parishes. She expressed gratitude to the participants and noted that the gathering offered an opportunity to develop practical skills and reflect on how their ministry contributes to meaningful liturgical celebrations.
Socorina Kolamkannie, a sacristan at St. Vincent Pallotti Church in Marol, welcomed Fr. Fargose’s practical guidance, particularly on maintaining order and caring for purificators and other sacred linens. She appreciated the opportunity to meet sacristans from other parishes and suggested organizing similar sessions annually.
Gemma Couttis of St. John the Evangelist Church in Marol described the gathering as an enjoyable and enriching experience. She said the program helped participants appreciate the sacred responsibilities entrusted to them and encouraged them to serve with greater commitment.
Camilo Pinto of St. Vincent Pallotti Church in Marol appreciated the practical guidance and the presentation during the seminar.
“Fr. Fargose’s PPT was very nice and well explained. I learnt many new things, especially about the sacredness of purificators and the importance of washing them separately,” Pinto said.
He added that the session also reminded participants of the attitude required in their service to the Church.
“As we are serving the Lord, we should always remain calm, patient and kind, and never lose our temper with others. Overall, a very nice session,” he said.
The seminar highlighted the contribution of sacristans to the Church’s liturgical life through careful preparation, responsible handling of sacred items and faithful service to their parish communities.
