Daily Readings: Romans 7:18-25a; Luke 12:54-59

St. Paul seems to go through an existential crisis at one point in time in his life as he pens his letter to the Romans. His inability to do what is right and his failure to avoid what is evil makes him feel emptiness deep within. He identifies his sin as the cause. The struggle between what is good and what is bad continues to go on in life. An authentic lover of God has to learn to delight in the law of God rather than the law of mind which makes Paul a captive to the law of his sins. He raises a question: “Who will rescue me from this body of death?” He himself answers: “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Making use of the dichotomy between body and mind, Paul states the following, “… with my mind I am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh I am a slave to the law of sin” (Romans 7:25).

“Weather forecast” is the fruit of God’s extraordinary blessings offered to human minds to study the weather conditions and foretell them. The meteorological department is busy all the time with this assignment. Humans make use of the scientific advanced knowledge to predict weather. What did the people of Jesus’ time use to predict the same? On the one hand, Jesus appreciates their capacity to interpret the appearance of earth and sky and on the other hand he questions their failure to interpret the present time, the time of Jesus’ presence. They had no courage to interpret the messianic age. Therefore Jesus teaches them to reconcile themselves with their adversaries. It is better to anticipate and reconcile with others rather than waiting for the last moment to come. Thus the passage invites the believers to repent and reconcile with God and with other people.

Call to Action: Paul struggled deep within himself with regard to discerning what is right and what is evil or what should be done and what should be avoided. Today we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation, spiritual directors and spiritual books to help us discern the will of God. How far do we make use of them?

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
