Faith Beyond Boundaries
December 01, 2025 Monday of the First Week of Advent
Daily Readings: Isaiah 4:2-6; Matthew 8:5-11
Children of God: In 16th-century Japan, there was a noble samurai named Justo Takayama Ukon. Unlike other warriors who were admired for their strength, Ukon was remarkable for his faith. When Christianity was banned, he practiced his faith in secret, risking his position and even his life. In the eyes of the world, a samurai was expected to embody power and loyalty to the shogun, but Ukon showed a deeper loyalty — to Christ. His life proves that faith can flourish in the most unexpected hearts.
If we look into the gospels, we hear about another unexpected believer: the Roman centurion. He was not Jewish, not part of the chosen people, yet he showed extraordinary trust in Jesus. He said “Lord, I am not worthy to have you under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.” His humility and faith amazed even Jesus, who said, “In no one in Israel have I found such faith.”
What does this teach us? That faith is not measured by status, culture, or background. Sometimes those we least expect — a pagan soldier, a persecuted samurai, a humble neighbor — can reveal to us what true trust in God looks like. Faith is a gift, and God can plant it in any heart that is open.
Children of God: As we reflect today, let us not underestimate the faith of others, nor ourselves. The Lord may be inviting us to see Him through the surprising witness of people outside our usual circles. Like Ukon in Japan or the centurion in the Gospel, may our own faith be marked by humility and trust, so that we too may hear the Lord’s words of praise.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
