Children of God:
July 6 is the feast day of Saint Maria Goretti.
Maria Goretti grew up in a poor farming family in Italy and learned early in life about sacrifice, responsibility, and prayer.
After the death of her father, she helped care for her younger siblings while her mother worked long hours in the fields.
Maria became known for her purity, kindness, and deep love for God despite her young age.
One day, a young man named Alessandro Serenelli attempted to force himself on her.
Maria resisted courageously because she believed sin would destroy both of their souls.
Enraged by her refusal, Alessandro attacked her violently and stabbed her multiple times.
Maria suffered terribly and was brought to the hospital, where doctors realized she would not survive.
Before her death, a priest asked if she forgave Alessandro for what he did to her.
Maria answered that she forgave him and even desired that he someday join her in heaven.
Years later, Alessandro experienced deep repentance and conversion while in prison, and he eventually became a faithful Christian man who publicly admitted the power of Maria’s forgiveness.
In the gospel of Matthew, people approached Jesus carrying different forms of suffering and desperation.
A synagogue official begged Jesus to help his dying daughter, while a woman suffering from hemorrhages for many years quietly reached out to touch His cloak.
Both people carried pain, fear, and hopelessness, yet both trusted that Jesus could restore what seemed beyond repair.
What are our inspirations for today?
First, faith keeps reaching for God even in painful moments.
The woman in the gospel silently suffered for many years.
Her sickness likely drained not only her strength but also her hope and dignity.
Yet she continued believing that even touching the cloak of Jesus could change her life.
She did not allow suffering to completely destroy her trust in God.
Her quiet act of faith became the beginning of healing.
The synagogue official also faced deep sorrow because his daughter was dying.
Despite fear and uncertainty, he still approached Jesus publicly and begged for help.
His faith persisted even when the situation already appeared hopeless
Many people today quietly carried emotional wounds, broken relationships, financial worries, sickness, and disappointments.
Some prayed for years without immediate answers.
Others felt exhausted and discouraged.
Yet the gospel reminded us that faith does not mean pretending life is easy.
Faith means continuing to reach for God even while carrying pain and uncertainty.
Faith keeps reaching for God even in painful moments
Second, forgiveness opens the door for healing and new life.
Saint Maria Goretti showed extraordinary forgiveness even while suffering greatly.
Instead of allowing hatred to consume her final moments, she chose mercy.
Her forgiveness later changed Alessandro’s life completely.
A hardened and violent man eventually repented because he encountered grace through the forgiveness of the person he wounded most deeply.
Jesus also restored life and dignity to the people in the gospel story.
He did not avoid the suffering woman or dismiss the grieving father.
God’s mercy continually created new beginnings where people expected only despair.
Forgiveness today remains difficult for many people because wounds could run deep.
Some carry resentment for years because of betrayal, abuse, harsh words, or disappointments.
Yet forgiveness does not mean pretending evil never happened.
Forgiveness means refusing to let bitterness control the heart forever.
Forgiveness opens the door for healing and new life.
As we reflect today, do we continue trusting God even when prayers seem unanswered and burdens feel heavy?
Do we hold onto anger and resentment, or do we allow God to soften our hearts toward forgiveness? Do we believe that Christ still brings healing, hope, and new life even in situations that appear hopeless?
Children of God:
The stories of Saint Maria Goretti and the people in the gospel reminded us that faith and mercy possess great power.
Human suffering never escaped the attention of Jesus because He cared deeply for wounded hearts.
God continued touching lives through faith that refused to give up and forgiveness that refused to become bitter.
Healing will not always erase scars immediately, but God still transforms pain into hope and renewal.
May we continue reaching for Christ no matter how wounded or discouraged we become.
