Love as the Foundation of Mission

May 23, 2025 Friday of the Fifth Week of Easter
Daily Readings:  Acts 15: 22-31; John 15: 12-17

The first reading is part of the Jerusalem Council, where the early Church resolves the dispute over whether Gentile converts need to follow Jewish laws. An amicable solution is reached and communicated to the believers through a letter. This brings great joy to them, demonstrating unity achieved through grace and discernment. The decision reflects a welcoming spirit, prioritizing faith in Jesus over rigid legalism. This balanced approach promotes unity without compromising core truths. It invites us today to approach issues with openness and healthy dialogue.

In Jesus’ farewell discourse, He redefines discipleship through the lens of unconditional love. This love transcends sentimentality and demands self-giving. By calling His disciples friends, Jesus elevates their relationship from servitude to intimacy. No literature or scripture has more powerfully or beautifully spoken of friendship than the words of Jesus: “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lays down his life for his friends. You are my friends…” (John 15:13–14).

Friends share in His mission, in His life, and understand the heart of the Father. What a privilege it is to be called ‘friends of Jesus’! This calls us to bear fruit that will last. Jesus has chosen us for His mission. Just as abiding in His love requires dependence and trust in His presence, let us embrace this love-fueled mission to bear lasting fruit.

Call to Action for Catholic Living:

  • Do you place unnecessary burdens on others in the name of faith?
  • Do you live as a friend of Jesus, seeking His will and acting on it?

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
