July 23 is the feast day of Saint Bridget of Sweden.
Saint Bridget of Sweden was born in 1303 into a noble and deeply Christian family.
Even as a young girl, she developed a strong love for prayer and often reflected on the suffering of Jesus.
She married Ulf Gudmarsson, and together they were blessed with eight children, one of whom later became Saint Catherine of Sweden.
Bridget proved that holiness could flourish in family life as she faithfully fulfilled her duties as wife and mother.
After her husband's death, she devoted herself completely to God.
She founded the Order of the Most Holy Savior, now known as the Bridgettines, dedicated to prayer and service.
She also received many spiritual visions that called both Church leaders and ordinary Christians to repentance and deeper holiness.
Bridget courageously spoke the truth even to kings and popes, urging them to live according to the Gospel.
She spent her final years in Rome, praying for the renewal of the Church until her death in 1373.
In the gospel story of Matthew, Jesus explained that not everyone understood His teachings because true understanding begins with a heart that is open to God.
What are our inspirations for today?
First, God reveals His truth to people who sincerely seek Him.
The disciples asked Jesus why He spoke to the crowds in parables.
Jesus answered that the mysteries of the Kingdom had been given to those who were willing to receive them, while others remained blind because their hearts were closed.
The problem was not that God refused to speak but that many refused to listen.
This still happens today.
Two people may hear the same homily, read the same Scripture, or experience the same event, yet one grows in faith while the other remains unchanged.
The difference often lies not in the message but in the disposition of the heart.
A humble heart receives God's word like fertile soil.
Saint Bridget lived with such openness.
Her life of prayer enabled her to recognize God's voice amid the ordinary events of daily life.
Because she continually sought the Lord, she received wisdom that inspired not only her family but also the entire Church.
God reveals His truth to people who sincerely seek Him.
Second, Blessed eyes are those that recognize God's presence.
Jesus told His disciples, "Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear" (Matthew 13:16).
He explained that many prophets and righteous people longed to witness what the disciples experienced but did not see it.
The disciples were blessed not because they were perfect but because they welcomed Jesus with faith.
We often ask God to show us extraordinary signs, yet we overlook the blessings already before us.
Every sunrise, every act of kindness, every celebration of the Eucharist, and every opportunity to forgive are invitations to encounter God.
The eyes of faith recognize that God is quietly at work in ordinary moments.
Saint Bridget saw God's hand in family life, suffering, prayer, and service.
Her spiritual vision did not separate her from the world but enabled her to love it more deeply.
We are also invited to cultivate that same vision so that we may recognize Christ in the people and situations we encounter each day.
Blessed eyes are those that recognize God's presence.
As we reflect today, let us ask ourselves: Am I willing to open my heart to God's word each day?
Do I recognize God's presence in the ordinary moments of my life? What prevents me from seeing with the eyes of faith?
Children of God:
Saint Bridget of Sweden showed us that holiness is possible in marriage, family life, widowhood, and religious life because she remained attentive to God's voice in every season of her life.
Her example teaches us that spiritual sight grows through prayer, humility, and obedience.
God continues to reveal Himself today to those who sincerely seek Him.
We do not need extraordinary visions to experience His presence.
We simply need hearts that are ready to listen and eyes that are willing to see.
