Trusting In Christ Amid Life’s Storms
Reflection Date: April 18, 2026 | Saturday of the Second Week of Easter
Daily Readings: Acts 6:1-7; John 6:16-21
Children of God:
Let us refresh our knowledge about Philippine history.
After the death of Ferdinand Magellan in Mactan, Cebu on April 1521, the expedition he led faced uncertainty and danger.
They had originally set sail with five ships, but losses and conflicts reduced their number.
When they reached Cebu, they found themselves with more ships than they could manage due to the reduced number of crew.
Among these vessels was the ship named Concepcion.
The leaders made a difficult decision to burn the ship.
It was not because it was damaged beyond repair, but because they no longer had enough men to sail all the ships safely.
Letting go of the Concepcion became necessary for the survival of the rest.
That painful decision helped the remaining crew move forward.
Sometimes, letting go is the only way to survive the journey.
In the gospel of John, the disciples were also on a difficult journey.
They crossed the sea at night, and strong winds began to blow.
The waters became rough, and fear entered their hearts.
Then Jesus came toward them, walking on the sea, and spoke words that calmed their fear.
What are our inspirations for today?
First, fear grows when we face life’s storms without recognizing Christ.
The disciples were experienced fishermen, yet the storm unsettled them.
The darkness of the night and the strong winds made the situation more frightening.
They struggled to move forward as the waves pushed against them.
When they saw Jesus walking on the sea, they were terrified at first.
But he said to them not to be afraid.
His presence changed their fear into courage.
In our lives, storms also come in different forms: problems, uncertainties, and fears.
When we focus only on the difficulties, fear increases.
But when we recognize that Christ is present, even in the storm, we begin to find peace and strength.
Second, trusting Christ leads us safely to where we need to be.
After Jesus spoke to them, the disciples welcomed him into the boat.
Something changed immediately.
The journey that seemed difficult suddenly became manageable.
Immediately the boat reached the shore to which they were heading (John 6:21).
The presence of Jesus brought them to their destination.
Trusting Christ does not always remove the storm instantly, but it gives us direction and assurance.
We can reflect on these questions in our hearts. What fears or storms am I facing right now in my life?
Do I recognize the presence of Christ in these difficult moments? And what do I need to let go of so that I can move forward with trust in God?
Children of God:
Life is filled with moments when we are asked to make difficult choices.
Sometimes we must let go in order to move forward.
The story of the disciples reminds us that we are never alone in our journey.
Christ comes to us, even in the darkest and most uncertain times.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
