When Grief Speaks Your Name

Reflection Date: July 22, 2026 | Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene

Children of God:
July 22 is the feast day of Saint Mary Magdalene. 

Saint Mary Magdalene was one of the most devoted followers of Jesus. 

The Gospels tell us that Jesus cast seven demons out of her, transforming her life completely. 

After experiencing the healing and mercy of Christ, she became one of His faithful disciples and accompanied Him during His public ministry. 

She remained close to Jesus even when many others fled in fear. 

Mary Magdalene stood at the foot of the cross as Jesus suffered and died, demonstrating remarkable courage and fidelity. 

She also witnessed where Jesus was buried. 

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, she went to the tomb to mourn and honor her beloved Master. 

There she discovered that the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty. 

In a profound encounter, the Risen Jesus appeared to her and entrusted her with the mission of announcing His resurrection to the disciples. 

Because of this mission, the Church has long honored Mary Magdalene as the "Apostle to the Apostles." 

In the gospel story of John, we see how her tears of grief became tears of joy when she encountered the living Christ.

What are our inspirations for today?

First, faithful love is possible even in moments of pain.

In the gospel story of John, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early in the morning while it was still dark. 

After discovering the empty tomb, she remained there weeping, unwilling to leave the place where Jesus had been laid. 

Her sorrow revealed the depth of her love. 

Even in confusion and grief, she stayed near the Lord.

Many people today experience moments of darkness: the loss of a loved one, illness, disappointment, or unanswered prayers. 

During such times, there is a temptation to walk away from God. 

Mary Magdalene teaches us another path. 

She remained faithful even when she did not understand what was happening.

Faithfulness during difficult moments often prepares us for deeper encounters with God. 

When we continue to pray, trust, and persevere despite pain, we create space for God to reveal His presence in unexpected ways. 

Faithful love is possible even in moments of pain.

Second, Jesus calls each person by name.

Mary Magdalene initially failed to recognize Jesus and mistook Him for the gardener. 

Everything changed when Jesus simply called her by name: "Mary!" 

In that personal moment, sorrow gave way to joy.

The Risen Lord continues to call each of us by name today. 

He knows our fears, struggles, dreams, and wounds. 

Our relationship with Christ is not impersonal or distant. 

It is deeply personal because God knows each one of us intimately and lovingly.

Mary Magdalene did not keep the good news to herself. 

Jesus sent her to announce the resurrection to the disciples. 

Every authentic encounter with Christ leads to mission. 

We, too, are called to share the hope, joy, and mercy we have received from the Lord.

Jesus calls each person by name.

As we reflect today, let us ask ourselves: Do I remain faithful to God during times of suffering and confusion? 

Am I attentive to the ways Jesus calls me personally each day? How do I share with others the joy of encountering the Risen Lord?

Children of God: 
Saint Mary Magdalene reminds us that God's mercy can transform any life. 

Her past did not define her future because she allowed Christ to heal and renew her. 

Her unwavering love kept her near Jesus even in His darkest hour. 

Because she remained faithful, she became the first witness of the Resurrection. 

Like Mary Magdalene, may we recognize the voice of Christ and courageously proclaim Him to others.
