Some 133 cardinal electors from across the globe will gather for a conclave in the Sistine Chapel to elect the successor to Pope Francis on May 7.

A total of 108 cardinals participating in the conclave were created cardinals by Pope Francis during his papacy from 2013 to 2025.

All the 132 cardinal electors should be 80 years old and below. Some of them are looking at electing a new pope who will continue Pope Francis’ progressive agenda.

Several cardinals are considered potential successors to Pope Francis. Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle are usually mentioned.

But the results of the election are usually surprising. Pope Francis was not a favorite during the 2013 conclave. But he was noticed when he delivered a speech at one of the congregations.

The country with the most number of cardinal electors is Italy with 17, followed by the US with 10.

The cardinals will vote in one or several secret ballots to elect the new pope. A cardinal needs a two-thirds majority to get elected as the new pope.

The conclave is scheduled to start on Wednesday afternoon.
