Pope Leo XIV will be discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 17 afternoon and return to the Vatican, the Holy See Press Office confirmed, according to Vatican News. The Pope is expected to pray the Angelus on Sunday, October 18, from the window of the papal apartment.

The Holy See Press Office released a statement from Pope Leo XIV’s doctors saying that he is fit to be discharged from Gemelli Hospital.

Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said the Pope underwent blood tests and a chest X-ray in the morning, which confirmed that his clinical condition allows him to leave the hospital.

A separate statement from the Holy See Press Office said the Pope will be discharged on October 17 afternoon and return to the Vatican.

“Following the doctors’ assessment this morning, Pope Leo XIV will be discharged today from Gemelli Hospital, where he was hospitalized for surgery on his right lung,” read the statement. “He will leave the hospital in the early afternoon and return to the Vatican. Tomorrow, he will lead the Angelus prayer from the window of the papal apartment.”

Before returning to the Vatican, the Pope will celebrate Mass in the room set aside for that purpose on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, according to the Press Office.
