Bangladesh: 83-Year-Old Nun’s New Book Inspires Faith and Reflection Among Youth
An 83-year-old Catholic nun in Bangladesh is encouraging a renewed spiritual reflection among young people through her latest book that explores faith, suffering, and the Christian journey of discipleship.
The book, Walking with Jesus, written in Bangla by Sr. Mary Proshanta of the Associates of Mary, Queen of the Apostles, was launched on May 11 in Dhaka. The event was attended by Emeritus Auxiliary Bishop Theotonius Gomes as chief guest, along with around 60 writers, readers, and members of the Catholic community.
The book reflects on core themes of Christian faith, including the meaning of the cross, the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit.
A special focus is placed on the challenges faced by young people today. Sr. Proshanta highlights the importance of mutual respect, interreligious dialogue, and solidarity with the poor and marginalized in Bangladesh’s multi-religious context. She emphasizes that authentic Christian faith does not withdraw believers from society but instead shapes them to become more compassionate, responsible, and courageous in addressing injustice.
Fr. Jhalak Anthony Desai, rector of Little Flower Seminary in Dhaka, described the work as a deeply spiritual and reflective guide. “Walking with Jesus invites readers to follow the path of human liberation through the life, teachings, suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection of Christ. It is not only a book to read, but a companion for an inner spiritual journey,” he said.
Fr. Agustin Ribeiro, director of the Christian Communication Center under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Bangladesh and publisher of the book through Pratibeshi Publishing, highlighted its relevance in today’s fast-changing world. He noted that rapid technological growth and rising consumerism have left many young people searching for meaning and direction.
“In such a context, reflection on spirituality, faith, and human responsibility is essential,” he said. “This book is a sincere effort to respond to that need.”
Speaking at the launch, Sr. Proshanta shared the inspiration behind her writing. “At this stage of my life, after years of active ministry, I have been drawn to deeper reflection on faith, gratitude, and life’s journey,” she said. “Young people today are asking important questions about God, faith, and purpose. Through this book, I do not offer fixed answers, but share paths shaped by prayer and experience.”
Auxiliary Bishop Gomes praised the author for her spiritual insight and contribution to faith formation, saying the book would help readers deepen their relationship with God and grow in reflection.
Known for her passion for music and education, Sr. Proshanta has composed around 60 religious songs and released two albums. Walking with Jesus is one of three books she has authored. Now retired after a long career in education, she continues her ministry through writing, prayer, and creative expression.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
