Bangladesh Diocese Celebrates Papal Honor for Senior Priest with Monsignor Title
The Catholic Diocese of Barishal celebrated the investiture of its newly appointed Monsignor, Fr. Lazarus Kanu Gomes, during a solemn Eucharistic celebration at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Barishal, a city in southern Bangladesh, on July 10.
The liturgy was presided over by Bishop Emmanuel K. Rozario of Barishal, who led the faithful in giving thanks for the recognition bestowed upon one of the Diocese's senior priests.
During the celebration, the Apostolic Letter from His Holiness Pope Leo XIV announcing the papal honor was formally proclaimed. Fr. Lazarus Gomes was then invested with the insignia of a Monsignor and presented with the official papal certificate according to the rites of the Catholic Church.
A reception and felicitation ceremony followed the Eucharistic celebration, bringing together clergy, religious, and lay faithful to honor the newly appointed Monsignor. Among those in attendance were the Secretary to the Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh, the Assistant Provincial of the Congregation of Holy Cross, the Provincial Superior of the sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM), the Superior General of the Little Holy Cross Sisters (LHC), diocesan priests, religious brothers, and representatives from parishes across the Diocese.
Nearly 450 faithful participated in the celebration, reflecting the deep respect and affection that Fr. Gomes has earned through decades of dedicated pastoral ministry.
Born on September 14, 1954, Monsignor Lazarus Kanu Gomes was ordained to the priesthood on November 19, 1986. For nearly four decades, he has faithfully served the Church through pastoral leadership, sacramental ministry, and his unwavering commitment to the spiritual growth of the people of God.
On June 9, 2026, Pope Leo XIV conferred upon Fr. Gomes the honorary title of Monsignor, recognizing his distinguished priestly service and his lasting contribution to the mission of the Catholic Church in Bangladesh.
The title Monsignor is a papal honor granted to diocesan priests who have demonstrated exemplary service, pastoral leadership, and fidelity to the Church. Derived from the Italian word Monsignore, meaning "My Lord," the title signifies a special mark of esteem and recognition from the Holy Father.
Sharing his joy after the celebration, one member of the faithful said, "May Almighty God continue to bless Monsignor Lazarus Gomes with good health, wisdom, and holiness. May his priestly ministry bear abundant fruit and inspire many to deepen their faith."
Another faithful added, "May his life remain a shining witness to the Gospel, and may the Lord strengthen him to continue serving the people of God with humility, love, and dedication for many years to come."
The Diocese of Barishal expressed gratitude to God for this significant moment and invited the faithful to continue praying for Monsignor Lazarus Kanu Gomes as he embraces this new honor in the service of Christ and His Church.
