The Bonpara Catholic Parish Christian Cooperative Credit Union Ltd. organized a special event to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons.

The parish comes under the Diocese of Rajshahi in northern Bangladesh.

The global theme for this year’s celebration was “Older Persons: Drivers of Local and Global Agendas, Our Aspirations, Our Well-being, Our Rights.” Around 450 senior men and women over the age of 50 from the parish took part in the program.

The main purpose of observing this day was to emphasize the dignity, health, and fundamental rights of older persons, as well as to call for greater recognition, support, and appreciation for their valuable contributions to society.

The day’s program began with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist, presided over by Father Patrick Gomes. Following the Mass, the senior participants joined in a joyful rally, which ended at the Mission Hall, where they were warmly welcomed with flower petals.

After everyone took their seats, a symbolic gesture of love and gratitude toward the elderly was performed according to traditional Bangladeshi custom: Mr. Bablu R. Corraya, Chairman of the Bonpara Christian Cooperative Credit Union, washed the feet of selected elderly representatives from various villages as a sign of respect and affection for all parents and senior citizens.

To mark the beginning of the celebration, Father Patrick Gomes, the Sisters, and selected elders lit candles, symbolizing the removal of darkness, evil, and illness, and the ushering in of light and wisdom.

In his welcome speech, Chairman Bablu R. Corraya said, “To raise global awareness about the challenges of aging and the need to protect the rights of older persons, the observance of the International Day of Older Persons began in 1991. This year, 2025, marks the 35th celebration of the International Day of Older Persons.”

Father Patrick Gomes expressed his joy, saying, “I am truly delighted to be with you on this special day. In today’s reality, older people are often seen as a burden, but in truth, they are our guides. Through their lifelong experience, we can illuminate and enrich our own lives.”

During the event, Chairman Corraya also announced the launch of a new social organization under the cooperative’s supervision, titled in Bangla “Khoma O Bhalobasha Songho” (Association of Forgiveness and Love).

The objectives of this organization are to bring together people over fifty, arrange mental and social recreation, ensure safe and caring services, create a prayerful environment, promote mutual financial and emotional support, stand beside the poor and helpless, and inspire members to live joyfully and meaningfully.

Several senior participants, including Mathi Biswas, Shankar Markush Gregory, and Milon Gomes,

Sandhya Peris and Shefali Rebeiro spoke about their life experiences, current situations, challenges, family roles, and responsibilities, and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the organizers for arranging such a meaningful event.
