Cardinal Tagle to Address Asian Bishops in Macau as Diocese Marks 450th Anniversary
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, pro-prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization and dean of the College of Cardinals, will address Asian bishops in Macau on October 31 before presiding over celebrations marking the 450th anniversary of the Diocese of Macau.
Cardinal Tagle’s address, titled “Magnifica Humanitas: Synodal Ways for Evangelization in Asia,” is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Macau Bishop’s House, as part of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences Office of Social Communication (FABC-OSC) Bishops’ Meeting 2026.
The meeting, running from October 27 to 31, brings together bishops and Church communicators to reflect on the theme “Magnifica Humanitas and the Synodal Ways of Evangelization in Asia: Communicating Christ in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
The gathering places the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence within a wider discussion of evangelization and synodality in Asian Churches. Its program includes sessions on AI and evangelization, discerning the use of AI, and 450 years of evangelization and communication in Asia, alongside national reports and group discernment.
The Diocese of Macau marks 450 years since Pope Gregory XIII established it on January 23, 1576, through the papal bull Super Specula Militantis Ecclesiae. The diocese became a major center for Catholic missionary activity in East Asia, serving as a base for missionaries traveling to China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia.
Macau’s role in the history of the Church in Asia extended beyond its own territory. Missionaries who passed through the city helped establish Catholic communities across the region, while the Church also contributed to education and social services. Among the early initiatives was the work of Jesuit Fr. Melchior Carneiro, who established the Holy House of Mercy and a hospital.
The anniversary year is being celebrated under the diocesan theme “From Macau to the World,” with an emphasis on honoring the Church’s missionary heritage while renewing its commitment to evangelization. In his pastoral letter for the jubilee, Bishop Stephen Lee Bun Sang of Macau said the commemoration should not simply celebrate the past but help the diocese discern its future direction and renew its missionary commitment.
Following his morning address on October 31, Cardinal Tagle is scheduled to visit the Centro Católico de Macau and attend a lunch before joining a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Penha Chapel. He will preside over the anniversary Mass at 5 p.m. at Forum de Macau.
The celebrations recognize Macau’s historical contribution to the spread of Catholicism across Asia while inviting the local Church to consider how that missionary legacy can shape its future.
The Diocese of Macau, now serving the Chinese special administrative region, continues its jubilee celebrations throughout 2026 and into January 2027.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
