Caritas Bangladesh Marks International Women’s Day with Renewed Call for Equality
Caritas Bangladesh, the humanitarian and social development arm of the Catholic Church in the country, observed International Women’s Day with a renewed call for equality at its central office in Dhaka on March 8.
The event was held under the global theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” reflecting the organization’s commitment to advancing gender equality, dignity, and empowerment for women and girls across Bangladesh.
The celebration began with a prayer led by Sukumar Corraya and the Caritas Choir, setting a reflective and hopeful tone for the day. Director (Programs) Apurbo Mrong delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the shared responsibility to uphold women’s rights in every sphere of life.
Motivational messages were delivered by Remi Subash Das, Director of Finance and Administration, and Theophil Nokrek, Director of the Caritas Development Institute. Both speakers highlighted the importance of justice, respect, and equal opportunities for all.
As a gesture of appreciation and solidarity, male staff members presented flowers to the women employees, recognizing their contributions to the institution and society.
During the program, speakers reflected on the ongoing challenges faced by women in Bangladesh. They emphasized the need to create safe, inclusive, and dignified environments for women and girls, noting that despite progress, many still face barriers to education, leadership opportunities, and security both at home and in the workplace.
Executive Director of Caritas Bangladesh, Daud Jibon Das, delivered the concluding message, affirming that men and women are equal and must be treated as such in all areas of life.
“We all want to build an institution together where we serve as human beings, not as men and women,” he said. “From our respective places, we must give women and girls, including our female colleagues, the dignity they deserve. By doing so, we can contribute to building a prosperous country.”
The event concluded with the creation of a symbolic “Tree of Commitment and Hope,” encouraging staff members to reaffirm their dedication to promoting equality, justice, and opportunities for all women and girls.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
