Caritas Bangladesh Observes International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking
Caritas Bangladesh observed the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking at its central office in Dhaka on February 8, reaffirming its commitment to protecting human dignity and combating all forms of exploitation.
The observance was held under the global theme, “Peace Begins with Dignity: A Global Call to End Human Trafficking.” The program began with an opening song, followed by a prayer dedicated to St. Josephine Bakhita, the patron saint of victims of human trafficking.
Participants reflected on a message from Pope Francis, which called on individuals and institutions worldwide to stand in solidarity with victims and to work courageously against modern forms of slavery. Speakers highlighted the life and witness of St. Bakhita, emphasizing her journey from enslavement to freedom as a powerful symbol of hope, resilience, and faith.
The program also featured presentations on the ongoing initiatives of Caritas Bangladesh to prevent human trafficking, raise awareness, and support vulnerable communities across the country. These efforts include advocacy, protection, and development programs aimed at addressing the root causes of exploitation.
A candle-lighting ceremony followed, with candles symbolizing peace, faith, love, justice, and hope—core values that guide Caritas Bangladesh’s mission in responding to human trafficking and related social injustices.
The event was attended by Executive Director Daud Jibon Das, along with other officials, sector and section heads, managers, in-charges, and staff members. The program was moderated by Jude Flavian Bala.
In his concluding remarks, Daud Jibon Das called on participants to renew their commitment to upholding human dignity. He noted that exploitation, torture, and human trafficking continue to take place in various forms across the world. Emphasizing collective responsibility, he said that such injustices can be prevented through service, love, and care for one another.
He urged members of the Caritas Bangladesh family to take action from their respective roles to help build a society free from trafficking and exploitation, describing this commitment as both a pledge for the day and a responsibility for the future.
