The Telugu Region of the Young Christian Students/Young Student Movement (YCS/YSM) elected and commissioned its new governing body on August 3 at St. Ann's High School in Bollaram, Hyderabad, in the southern Indian state of Telangana, reaffirming its commitment to forming young leaders rooted in Christian values and service.
The election and investiture ceremony was held under the leadership of Sr. Lucy, principal of St. Ann's High School, and Ms. Mercy, YCS/YSM coordinator. Organizers said the election followed a transparent and participatory process, giving students firsthand experience of democratic values, accountability, and servant leadership.
During the investiture ceremony, the newly elected student leaders formally assumed office and pledged to carry out their responsibilities with dedication, integrity, and a spirit of service.
The program also featured cultural performances and leadership activities that showcased the students' talents while reinforcing the mission of YCS/YSM to form responsible Christian youth committed to serving both the Church and society.
Addressing the gathering, Fr. Medi Sleevaraj, SDB, regional youth director, underscored the important role of Catholic schools in shaping future leaders.
He said schools are not only centers of academic excellence but also places where values, character, and leadership are nurtured.
Encouraging the newly elected governing body members, Fr. Sleevaraj described leadership as a vocation of service rather than a position of authority. He urged the students to lead with humility, integrity, and compassion, reminding them that authentic leadership is measured by a willingness to serve others selflessly.
He also encouraged the student leaders to become witnesses to Gospel values by inspiring their peers through their words, actions, and commitment to the common good.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from Sr. Lucy, who expressed appreciation to Fr. Sleevaraj for his message and continued support of youth ministry. She also thanked the teachers, coordinators, and students whose collaboration ensured the success of the event.
The gathering ended in an atmosphere of hope as the newly elected student leaders began their term with a renewed commitment to faith, service, and responsible leadership, reflecting the YCS/YSM Telugu Region's ongoing mission of forming young people as active disciples and responsible citizens.
