China: Hangzhou Cathedral Commissions 16 Extraordinary Ministers on Corpus Christi

16 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion were commissioned during the Corpus Christi Mass at Hangzhou Cathedral on June 7, 2026.

The Cathedral of the Diocese of Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province, eastern China, commissioned 16 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion during a Corpus Christi Mass on June 7, according to Faith Press.

During the liturgy, 13 ministers were recommissioned for another term of service, while three received their first appointment.

Following the homily, the commissioning rite took place before the congregation. The candidates processed to the altar and publicly pledged to carry out their ministry faithfully, deepen their love for the Eucharist and the Church, and serve the faithful with charity.

The parish priest then presented each minister with a pyx and a letter of appointment. Their mandate will be valid for three years.

According to Faith Press, all 16 ministers completed the required formation and demonstrated the spiritual and pastoral readiness expected for the ministry.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist clergy in the distribution of the Eucharist, particularly when pastoral needs require additional ministers. They also bring Holy Communion to the elderly, the sick, and others unable to attend Mass, helping maintain their connection with the Church’s sacramental life.

The report noted that these ministers serve in collaboration with ordained clergy and exercise their responsibilities under the guidance of the Church. Their ministry supports the pastoral mission of the parish and strengthens communion among the faithful.

While a public commissioning ceremony is not required under canon law, Faith Press reported that the rite carries important pastoral value. It provides an opportunity for the Church community to recognize those entrusted with the ministry and to pray for them as they begin or continue their service.

The commissioning also highlights the Church’s commitment to ensuring that the Eucharist remains accessible to those who cannot participate regularly in parish celebrations because of age, illness, or other circumstances.

The Diocese of Hangzhou is based in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, a major city on China’s eastern coast located southwest of Shanghai.

According to Faith Press, the celebration concluded with prayers for the newly commissioned ministers and for the continued growth of the Church’s mission of service, communion, and pastoral care.
