With the midterm elections in the Philippines approaching on May 12, 2025, Bishop Elias L. Ayuban, Jr., CMF, DD, Bishop of Cubao, is urging Filipino voters to approach the polls with moral clarity and a deep sense of responsibility for the country’s future.

In a reflection released ahead of the elections, the prelate warned of the multiple crises currently affecting the nation, including “a national debt exceeding ₱18 trillion, deep political and social divisions, widespread corruption, the proliferation of disinformation, and the erosion of moral values.”

Quoting Pope Francis’ words during the Urbi et Orbi Extraordinary Blessing at the height of the pandemic in 2020, Bishop Ayuban reminded the faithful: “We are in the same boat… We find ourselves afraid and lost. We were caught off guard by an unexpected, turbulent storm.”

“These words remain deeply relevant,” he said. “In truth, whatever happens to the boat affects everyone on board—whether we are in first class, tourist, or economy class. If the boat sinks, we all go down with it.”

Bishop Ayuban emphasized that the coming elections are more than a political event—they are a moral crossroads. “When the future of our country is at stake, we must allow facts to prevail over opinions and let personal preferences be guided by a collective discernment for the common good,” he said.

He also called on voters to choose leaders who are “capable and trustworthy,” with both competence and integrity to guide the nation forward. “We cannot afford to entrust our journey to those unprepared for the responsibility,” he stressed.

While acknowledging the uncertainties and challenges facing the country, Bishop Ayuban ended his message on a hopeful note: Resurrectio Domini, spes nostra—the Resurrection of the Lord is our hope. “The Risen Christ remains the true Captain of this boat. With Him at the helm, no storm is too great to overcome.”

The elections on May 12, 2025, will determine the country’s future political direction, and Catholic leaders continue to call on the faithful to vote with conscience, guided by truth, justice, and the teachings of the Gospel.
