India: Catholic Nun honored for Outstanding Contribution to Sacred Music

Sr. Pushpanjali Paul was recognized by Nav Sadhana Kala Kendra for her contributions to sacred music.

A Catholic cultural and arts training institute in the historic city of Varanasi, northern India, has honoured a Catholic nun for her exceptional contributions to sacred music, hymn composition, and value-based dance dramas.

Sr. Pushpanjali Paul, SSpS, received the prestigious Printania Award from Nav Sadhana Kala Kendra. The award was presented during the “Dikshant Samaroh” (Convocation) on March 1, 2026, a cultural event recognising final-year students completing degrees in Indian classical music and dance. Dignitaries from across the arts and music fields attended, and the ceremony featured performances by the graduating students.

Hailing from the Diocese of Khandwa, Sr. Pushpanjali is a member of the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSPS). Academically accomplished, she holds a master’s degree in Hindi literature and diplomas in pastoral communication, art and spirituality, and therapeutic use of fine arts. Beyond her formal qualifications, she is a gifted composer and lyricist, having written and composed more than 300 songs, bhajans, and hymns.

Under the title “MANGAL-MEKHLA” (A River of Grace), she has released 15 volumes of audio recordings, all available on the YouTube channel Sadhana-Sanchar Bhopal. She has also written, choreographed, and staged dance dramas in India and abroad, performing in the U.S., Germany, Ireland, and Italy. Notably, she performed liturgical dance at St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome, in honour of the late Saint Pope John Paul II.

Her acclaimed dance dramas include “Jeevan ke Chhinten” (The Splashes of Life), “Dev-Kripa” (God’s Grace), “Divine Delight”, “Padcchap” (The Silent Steps), “Ujjalon ki Oor” (Towards Light), “Talash” (A Quest), and “Chir-Tamanna” (Do This in Memory of Me). She also conducts music retreats, meditation sessions, and art therapy workshops, using sacred music and the arts to foster peace, harmony, healing, and spiritual wholeness.

Driven by her faith and artistic vision, Sr. Pushpanjali founded Sadhana-Sanchar, a centre for art, spirituality, culture, and communication in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, where she continues her work in music, dance, and spiritual formation.
