India: Church-Hosted Workshop Trains IDP Women in Food Processing in Violence-Hit Manipur

Imphal Archdiocese organized a one-day training seminar on Food Processing and Value Addition for IDP women on January 19, 2026.

The Diocesan Social Service Society (DSSS) of the Archdiocese of Imphal, in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, conducted a one-day training seminar on Food Processing and Value Addition for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) on January 19, 2026. The programme was held at the newly established Catholic Resettlement Centre in V. Munpi Village, Churachandpur District.

The training was specially designed for IDP women who have recently resettled at the centre, where 76 houses were constructed with the initiative and support of the Archdiocese of Imphal. Most of the families now residing at the centre belong to St. Joseph’s Parish, Sugnu, whose homes and parish infrastructure were destroyed during the ethnic violence in Manipur.

A total of 40 IDP women participated in the seminar. The programme aimed to equip displaced families with practical livelihood skills, enabling them to adapt to their new environment after securing shelter and to move towards sustainable income generation.

Mr. James Lampu, an expert in food processing and candy making, and himself an IDP, served as the resource person for the seminar.

Mr. James Lampu, an expert in food processing and candy making, served as the resource person. He conducted both theoretical and hands-on practical sessions, focusing on value addition using locally available produce such as king chilli and gooseberry. Participants were trained in candy-making techniques using these items, which are abundant in the region and hold strong potential for self-employment and income generation.

During the training, participants were provided with free pens, notebooks, and refreshments. It was also announced that women who demonstrate commitment and seriousness in pursuing this livelihood would be supported with materials required for food processing and candy making.

The Archdiocese of Imphal, in collaboration with various Catholic agencies, has undertaken several initiatives to support Catholic IDPs in Manipur, including housing, livelihood assistance, and education for children. The Church continues to play a vital role in upholding the dignity, survival, and empowerment of displaced families amid the ongoing crisis.

The programme was sponsored by Manos Unidas and implemented by DSSS, with effective coordination by Mr. Thomas Paupi, Regional Manager of DSSS, who is himself an IDP.

The training proved to be meaningful and empowering for the IDP community, offering practical guidance towards financial stability and self-reliance. It encouraged participants to move from dependency towards proactive planning for their families’ future. The programme concluded with a closing prayer led by Ms. Regina Siannuamniang, one of the participating IDP women.
