India: Goa’s Holy Family Sisters celebrate 90 years of mission

The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth (SFN) joyfully marked 90 years of devoted service with a solemn Mass titled “Yatra Bhorvanxeachi, Vakhann’nni Devachi” (A Journey of Hope, in Praise to God) at Holy Family Convent, Sancoale, Goa, western India, on June 16.

The celebration began with a presentation by Sr. Sukuria introducing the history of the congregation, followed by a graceful prayer dance by Holy Family Convent boarding girls.

Simião Purificação Fernandes, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, presided over the Mass, joined by 19 priests and numerous dignitaries, including Fr. Nazareth Fernandes, SFX (superior general, Society of Pilar), and Fr. Pedro Rodrigues (Jesuit Provincial of Goa).

In his homily, Bishop Fernandes recounted a story of a child who drew “the hands of God” as a symbol of gratitude. He connected this image to the many “hands” that have shaped the congregation, from its founder, Fr. Faustino de Souza, to today’s sisters, encouraging members to carry forward the mission through holiness, focus, and sacrifice.

A symbolic offering of fruits representing various ministries expressed thanksgiving for the congregation’s nine decades of service. The superior general, Sr. Berna Rodrigues, offered a heartfelt vote of thanks to all who contributed to the success of the celebration.

The celebration honored the elderly sisters, both at Eleanora Linse Bhavan and at the Mass, for their lifetime of commitment.

The celebration also featured the melodious choir of Perpetual Succour Convent High School, Navelim, adding beauty and devotion to the liturgy.

To mark the occasion, the congregation launched their quarterly magazine, Savera, and students who excelled in the 2024–2025 SSC examinations were felicitated.

The event stood as a moving tribute to a legacy of love, service, and faith, leaving all present inspired by the congregation’s journey and dedication to the Church and society.
