India: Kerala Priest Donates School to IDP Catholic Resettlement Centre in Manipur

A newly built school was inaugurated at the Catholic resettlement center for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in V. Munpi, Manipur, marking a vital step in helping families rebuild their lives after ethnic violence.

A newly constructed school was inaugurated at the Catholic resettlement centre for internally displaced persons (IDPs) at V. Munpi in the north east Indian state of Manipur, marking a significant step in rebuilding the lives of families displaced by ethnic violence.

The school was made possible through the contribution of Fr. Joseph Koluthuvellil, Executive Director and Secretary of Welfare Services Ernakulam, Kerala, south India.

St. Joseph's School was made possible through the support of Fr. Joseph Koluthuvellil.

He was present at the inauguration ceremony, during which Fr. Varghese Vellickakam, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Imphal, blessed the new facility.

Though simple, the ceremony carried deep meaning for the 76 families currently residing at the resettlement centre. The houses at the site were constructed with support from the Archdiocese of Imphal and assistance from Catholic donors.

Among those present were Fr. Mung, Parish Priest of St. Thomas Parish, Singngat, three religious sisters, and members of the resettled community.

During a brief felicitation programme, Fr. Mung spoke about the challenges faced by the displaced families, many of whom are adjusting to a new environment without prior experience in cultivation or business. He stressed that education is a vital foundation for restoring dignity and rebuilding their future.

Fr. Varghese echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of self-reliance. Recalling the early days of the housing project, he said, “I made the promise without knowing where the resources would come from. Today, it has become a reality not because of us, but because of God. We must pray and thank God.” He encouraged the families to value the assistance they have received and to use it wisely rather than depend on others.

In his address, Fr. Joseph reflected on his six years of service with Welfare Services Ernakulam and expressed his happiness at being able to assist the displaced people of Manipur. He described the school as an investment in the children’s future and a sign of hope amid hardship. He also noted his support for the Belpuan resettlement centre, where a church is currently under construction.

Fr. Joseph thanked the IDP community for their unity and cooperation, acknowledging that their collective effort helped make the school a reality. He also expressed appreciation to Fr. Varghese and Fr. Mung for their leadership and support throughout the project.

Emphasizing the transformative role of education, Fr. Joseph said the school aims to empower children and open new opportunities for the community. He assured continued support and offered assistance for students interested in pursuing higher education in Kerala.

Fr. Joseph Koluthuvellil is a diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly. He currently serves as Executive Director and Secretary of Welfare Services Ernakulam. He holds a postgraduate degree in Business Administration and has previously served as Assistant Executive Director and Assistant Director at the Naipunya Institute of Management in Pongam, Thrissur district.
