India: Kerala Priest Earns Heavy Vehicle Driving License

Fr. Rinto Kodiyan, parish priest and chaplain of Vellani Parish in Kerala, India, has earned a heavy vehicle driving license.

A Catholic priest from the Diocese of Irinjalakuda in Kerala, southern India, has earned a heavy vehicle driving license after completing training at a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) center.

Fr. Rinto Kodiyan, parish priest and chaplain of Vellani Parish, was among seven participants who received licenses from the first batch of the KSRTC-run training center in Irinjalakuda, a town in Kerala's Thrissur district.

The priest said his interest in driving began during childhood.

“Driving has been my passion since childhood. I used to drive the vehicles of my brothers and friends,” he said.

Fr. Kodiyan said the license formalizes a skill he has practiced for years. He noted that many people, including those from different faith communities, bring newly purchased vehicles to him for blessing.

Fr. Rinto Kodiyan: “This license will help me during emergencies. I will not always have to depend on others to drive a heavy vehicle when the need arises.”

“I usually drive the vehicle within the church compound before blessing it,” he said. “So far, I have blessed more than 100 heavy vehicles, including buses and trucks.”

Asked how the license could be useful in the future, Fr. Kodiyan pointed to his involvement in social and community service activities.

“This license will help me during emergencies. I will not always have to depend on others to drive a heavy vehicle when the need arises,” he said.

In addition to his parish responsibilities, Fr. Kodiyan teaches social sciences at a local school.
