India: Pope Appoints Cardinal Filipe to Evangelization Dicastery

Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, the President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI)

On April 25, 2023, Pope Francis appointed the Archbishop of Goa and Daman, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, the President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), as a member of the Section for Fundamental Issues of Evangelization in the World (New Evangelization) of the Dicastery for Evangelization.

Archbishop Rino Fisichella heads this section that oversees the forthcoming Holy Year, also known as Jubilee Year 2025.

On October 7, 2022, Cardinal Ferrão was also appointed a member of the Dicastery for Evangelization.

Pope Francis appointed him Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria in Via on August 27, 2022.

Cardinal Ferrão was born on January 20, 1953, in Aldona, in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. As a priest, he was ordained on October 28, 1979.

As auxiliary Bishop of Goa and Daman, he was appointed titular bishop of Vanariona on December 20, 1993, and ordained as the titular Bishop on April 10, 1994.

His appointment as Archbishop of Goa and Daman and patriarch of the East Indies took place on December 12, 2003, and he was installed on March 21, 2004.

CCBI elected him president at its 31st Plenary Assembly in Chennai in 2019.

He is also chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India's laity commission.
