India: Pope appoints Father Joseph Kallarckal as the Bishop of Jaipur

Pope Francis appointed Father Joseph Kallarackal (59) as Bishop of Jaipur on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

Pope Francis appointed Father Joseph Kallarackal (59) as Bishop of Jaipur on Saturday, April 22.

With this appointment, the pope accepted the resignation of Bishop Oswald Lewis (78)  from the pastoral care of the diocese. 

Father Joseph Kallarackal was born on December 10, 1964, at Anavilasam, in the Eparchy of Kanjirapally, Kerala, and was ordained priest on January 2, 1997, for the Diocese of Ajmer.

In the Diocese of Allahabad, he studied Philosophy and Theology at St. Joseph's Regional Seminary from 1989 to 1997.

In addition to his Bachelor of Arts degree from Allahabad University, Allahabad, he also holds a Master of Arts in Political Science from Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University (MDSU) Ajmer. 

He also earned a Bachelor's in Education from Ponda, Goa Vidyaprasarak Mandal (GVM), Goa.

He served as vice-rector of St. Theresa's Minor Seminary, Ajmer, from 1997 to 2000 and as parish priest and principal at St. Anselm's School, Nagaur, from 2000 to 2003.

Between 2003 and 2004, he studied for a Bachelor of Education in Goa, then served as Dean and Parish Priest at St. Teresa's Church in Jodphur from 2004 to 2007.

He served as Rector of the Minor Seminary, Ajmer, from 2007 to 2013 and Parish Priest, Principal, and Manager at St. Paul's School, Falna, from 2013 to 2015.

He worked as Principal and Manager at St. Paul's School, Pali, from 2015 to 2016 and rector at St. Theresa's Minor Seminary, Ajmer, from 2016 to 2021.

His current title is Dean and Parish Priest of Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Ajmer, where he has served since 2021.
