Indian Cardinal urges people to use social media responsibly

Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao, called on people to use social media responsibly and published Blood Towards Full Presence - A Pastoral Reflection on Engaging with Social Media at the Archbishop's House, Panjim, Goa, on June 23, 2023.

Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao, president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and archbishop of Goa and Daman, urged individuals to use social media responsibly.

The message was delivered during the release of the Indian version of Full Presence: A Pastoral Reflection on Engaging with Social Media at the Archbishop's House, Panjim, Goa, on June 23, 2023.

The Cardinal urged, "Social media offer a chance to encourage interaction with others, but they can also make us feel alone."

"While using social media, some people may develop the dangerous tendency to isolate themselves from society by becoming ‘social hermits,’ which is a dangerous phenomenon," said the Cardinal.

The releasing ceremony was attended by Father Stephen Alathara, Deputy Secretary General of the CCBI; Father Duming Gonsalves, Executive Secretary of the Commission for Catechetics, Father Barry Cardozo, Director of the Goa Archdiocesan Center for Social Communication, Mr. Menino Menezes, and Ms. Hazel Rodrigues.

The document published on May 29, 2023, by the Dicastery for Communication is titled Towards Full Presence- A Pastoral Reflection on Engagement with Social Media.

In the document, Christians are encouraged to reflect on their involvement in social media, which is becoming a more important part of people's lives. It also discusses how to promote a culture of 'loving neighbors in the digital age.
