The World Needs Socially Responsible, Compassionate, and Value-Driven Learners: Indian Jesuit Educationist
A noted Indian Jesuit educationist has emphasized the urgent need to shape socially responsible, compassionate, and value-driven learners in India today.
Fr. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ, Principal of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, delivered an insightful lecture titled “Reimagining Education in the 21st Century: A Paradigm Shift Towards Inclusiveness and Transformation” at the Father Mervyn Carapiet Memorial Lecture 2025, held on August 17 at the Church of Christ the King, Park Circus, Kolkata.
Fr. Savio stressed the importance of a forward-thinking, inclusive approach to education, one that can respond meaningfully to the complex challenges of our times.
He highlighted the integration of the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) into educational frameworks as a vital pathway to forming learners grounded in social responsibility, compassion, and values.
The Jesuit priest warned that without restructuring the existing educational system, any effort to reimagine education would remain ineffective.
The event drew an enthusiastic audience of around 100 attendees, including parishioners, members of the local clergy, alumni of St. Xavier’s College, and others.
Fr. Mervyn Carapiet, a priest of the Archdiocese of Calcutta, was a resident professor of moral theology and formator at Morning Star Regional Seminary, Barrackpore, Kolkata. He was also a regular columnist for The Herald, the English tabloid of the Archdiocese and the oldest Catholic weekly in India.
His writings focused on Christian theology, homiletics, and moral issues. He authored many books, including the popular titles “The Tension Anthropology of Vatican II” (1978) and “The Virtues” (1985). He passed away on September 14, 2020.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
