Indian Diocese Trains 58 Church Leaders to Strengthen Grassroots Gospel Sharing
The Diocese of Purnea in Bihar, eastern India, trained 58 priests, religious, and lay catechists to promote Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) and strengthen grassroots participation in the Church’s mission during a workshop on October 15, Catholic Connect reported.
The Training of Trainers workshop, held at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre, focused on equipping participants with practical skills to facilitate Gospel sharing and strengthen faith formation in their parishes.
Bishop Francis Tirkey of Purnea emphasized the role of BECs in building a vibrant, participatory, and faith-centered Church. He urged participants to promote the communities in their parishes to foster Christian fellowship, deepen faith, and encourage greater involvement of the faithful in the Church’s mission.
Fr. George Jacob, SAC, executive secretary of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) Commission for Basic Ecclesial Communities, led a session titled “What Is the Basic Understanding of BEC for Our Parishes?”
He explained the purpose and significance of BECs in parish life, highlighting their role in nurturing faith, communion, mutual support, and Christian commitment through regular engagement with the Word of God.
Emmanuel Johnson, a member of the National Council for BEC, discussed the need for these communities and their contribution to strengthening Christian fellowship, bringing families together, and encouraging Gospel sharing.
He urged participants to make BECs a pastoral priority, enabling the faithful to take greater responsibility for the life and mission of the Church.
Afternoon sessions focused on the practical application of the Seven Steps of Gospel Sharing. Participants learned to listen prayerfully to Scripture, reflect on its message, share their faith experiences, and discern ways to apply the Gospel in their daily lives.
A practical exercise allowed participants to experience the process and develop the skills needed to facilitate BEC meetings in their parishes.
The workshop also explored strategies for sustaining and expanding BECs across the diocese. Participants were encouraged to organize regular Gospel-sharing meetings, train and accompany BEC animators, involve families and parishioners, and ensure effective coordination and follow-up.
The training concluded with participants renewing their commitment to strengthening Basic Ecclesial Communities and building a participatory, Christ-centered Church rooted in the Word of God.
