Indonesia: “All-Weather Missionary” Marks 62 Years of Priesthood at 94
As the Church observed the World Day of Prayer for Vocations on April 26, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) in Indonesia marked the 62nd anniversary of the priesthood of Fr. Lambertus Somar, a 94-year-old priest known for his long-standing pastoral and social work.
Fr. Lambertus Somar, MSC, often referred to as the “All-Weather Missionary,” is recognized in Indonesia for his ministry to the sick and for founding a rehabilitation center for people recovering from drug addiction in Sentul City, Bogor Regency, West Java. He began focusing on healing ministry about 35 years ago and has since served thousands. In 1995, he started assisting individuals struggling with drug addiction, initially receiving one person per month, then weekly, and eventually daily.
The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Fr. Sam Maranresy, MSC, outgoing superior of the MSC Indonesian Province, with the participation of dozens of MSC priests.
During the Mass, participants reflected on Fr. Somar’s witness, particularly his consistency in living out his vocation over several decades.
In his remarks, Fr. Somar thanked those who attended and spoke about the meaning of life and service. “In this journey of life, the presence of others, whether known or unknown, is a sign of God’s accompaniment,” he said. “Every opportunity in life is a blessing worth recognizing.” Despite his age, he addressed the gathering clearly, although he remained seated in a wheelchair for most of the celebration.
He said that priestly life is an ongoing opportunity to serve others. “Our presence becomes meaningful in the lives of others,” he added.
Born on May 20, 1932, in Merauke, South Papua, Fr. Somar has spent more than six decades in religious life. He continues to travel to remote areas when possible and remains engaged in pastoral work. “Life must be lived with joy,” he said. “Do not dwell on hardships. Life is an opportunity to contribute to others.”
In addition to pastoral ministry, Fr. Somar has been involved in education, health care, and social services, working through initiatives such as the Kasih Mulia Foundation. He has also promoted family-based approaches to addressing social issues, including drug prevention, and is currently developing training modules for parish use.
Fr. Sam Maranresy, MSC, said the anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of priestly fidelity. “Being a priest is not only about fulfilling duties, but about sustaining a relationship with God and His people,” he said.
He added that vocation involves ongoing commitment, shaped by both challenges and renewal. “The call is to remain in love and to bear fruit through that love,” he said.
The anniversary highlighted the sustained ministry of Fr. Somar and the broader role of religious priests in pastoral and social outreach across Indonesia.
