Karachi Archdiocese Holds Clergy Renewal Program to Strengthen Priests for Ministry
About 40 diocesan priests of the Archdiocese of Karachi gathered for a three-day Clergy Renewal Program from July 22 to 24, focusing on spiritual renewal, emotional well-being, and sustainable pastoral ministry.
Held at the Catechetical Centre in Karachi, the annual program combined prayer, reflection, and practical formation to help priests strengthen their personal, psychological, and spiritual lives amid the growing demands of ministry.
The initiative aimed to deepen ongoing priestly formation while equipping participants with practical tools for self-care, stress management, and healthier pastoral leadership.
One of the keynote sessions was led by Dr. Glenis D'Souza, a family medicine specialist at Holy Family Hospital and the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Karachi. She emphasized that emotional and psychological well-being is essential for effective ministry.
"A priest must first care for his own emotional and psychological well-being in order to serve others effectively," she said.
Fr. Ryan Joseph, parish priest of St. Lawrence Parish in Karachi, spoke about the importance of maintaining healthy boundaries in ministry.
"Establishing healthy boundaries is not a sign of weakness but a requirement for sustainable service," he told the participants.
Fr. Mario Rodrigues, principal of St. Patrick's School in Karachi, reflected on leadership and relationships within parish communities, stressing that emotional intelligence and constructive conflict resolution are indispensable qualities for priests.
Meanwhile, Fr. Arthur Charles, director of the Catechists Commission of Karachi, highlighted the importance of affective maturity in priestly celibacy.
"Living celibacy with affective maturity allows a priest to love and serve with freedom and authenticity," he said.
The program addressed a wide range of topics, including human integration, stress management, compassion fatigue, psycho-sexual integration, and ministry boundaries. Following each presentation, participants engaged in group discussions, sharing pastoral experiences and practical ways to strengthen fraternity and mutual support within the presbyterate.
Fr. Benjamin Shehzad, a senior priest of the archdiocese, described the gathering as a valuable opportunity for priests to step back from their demanding pastoral responsibilities, reflect on their well-being, and renew their commitment to serving God's people.
Fr Shahzad Arshad, director of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace of the A.rchdiocese of Karachi, said the sessions provided practical insights into maintaining personal balance and preventing burnout.
"The program has equipped priests with practical tools to face the challenges of parish ministry while remaining spiritually and emotionally healthy," he said.
The renewal concluded with the celebration of the Eucharist, presided over by Archbishop Benny Mario Travas of Karachi.
In his homily, Archbishop Travas reflected on the Gospel's call to prepare the soil of the heart so that ministry may bear lasting fruit. He encouraged priests to remain rooted in humility, detachment, and charity.
He said humility enables priests to recognize their complete dependence on God's grace, detachment frees them from being hindered by material possessions, and charity is expressed through loving service to God's people.
The archbishop urged the clergy to cultivate these virtues continually as they respond to the pastoral challenges facing the Church today.
The gathering ended with a renewed commitment to priestly fraternity and ongoing formation, reaffirming the Archdiocese of Karachi's commitment to the spiritual, pastoral, and personal well-being of its clergy.
