Lahore Archbishop Opens Church Cricket Tournament, Promotes Unity and Brotherhood
Archbishop Khalid Rehmat inaugurated a cricket tournament organized by the Archdiocese of Lahore on May 1, bringing together young players from parishes across Lahore.
The archbishop, the chief guest at the event, was welcomed with garlands and traditional drumbeats, setting a festive tone for the day.
Before the matches began, he met the players on the field and offered words of encouragement to each team. He then formally opened the tournament by taking the crease and striking the first ball, drawing cheers from participants and spectators.
The event was organized by Rev. Fr. Asif Sardar, vicar general of the archdiocese and director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), in collaboration with St. Anthony’s Church Lahore, one of the oldest parishes and a key center of Catholic life in the city.
Six teams representing different parishes competed in the friendly tournament, which aimed to promote healthy recreation among youth and foster unity within the Church community.
Priests, nuns, families, and parish leaders gathered to support the players. People of all ages joined the celebrations, cheering for teams, sharing conversations, and even dancing, creating an atmosphere of joy and solidarity.
Addressing the gathering during a break, Archbishop Rehmat said such initiatives contribute to personal and community development.
“Teamwork on the field leads to harmony in the community and in the Church,” he said, encouraging young people to cultivate discipline and resilience.
“Sports teach us to win with humility and lose with grace,” he added, noting that recreation and fraternity are essential aspects of a balanced life.
Participants and spectators welcomed the initiative.
Brother Shafaqat, one of the players, said the tournament provided valuable opportunities for young people to build confidence and strengthen friendships across parishes.
“We need days like this where we can enjoy nature and focus on health,” he said.
Christopher, a spectator, highlighted the physical and mental benefits of such activities.
“In a time when we are glued to screens, events like this help us reconnect with one another,” he said. “Spending a day together with clergy, youth, and the faithful is a meaningful experience.”
Fr. Sardar reaffirmed the commitment of the PMS to creating platforms where young people can grow in unity and purpose.
“These gatherings help build community and give people a sense of belonging,” he said, adding that the energy and talent displayed by the youth reflect their potential to contribute to both the Church and society.
The event concluded with a trophy ceremony, where Archbishop Rehmat and Fr. Sardar presented medals to the teams, marking a successful day of sports, fellowship, and faith for the Catholic community in Lahore.
