Philippine Bishops Call for Nationwide Prayers, Aid Drive for Earthquake Victims

The Philippine bishops have called for nationwide prayers and financial assistance in the wake of the recent earthquake that struck Sarangani Province and other parts of Mindanao.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called on dioceses, parishes, religious communities, and Catholic institutions nationwide to offer prayers and financial assistance for communities devastated by the powerful earthquake that struck Sarangani province and other parts of Mindanao, southern Philippines.

In a statement dated June 9, CBCP President Archbishop Gilbert A. Garcera expressed “profound sorrow and solidarity” with families affected by the disaster, particularly those who lost loved ones, suffered injuries, or were displaced from their homes and livelihoods.

“We grieve with the families who have lost loved ones, pray for the speedy recovery of those who have been injured, and stand in spiritual communion with all those who have been displaced,” Archbishop Garcera said.

The archbishop also remembered rescue workers, medical personnel, government agencies, and volunteers who continue to assist affected communities in the aftermath of the earthquake.

“In moments such as these, we are reminded that the Church is called to be a sign of hope and a witness of charity,” he said, urging Catholics not to remain indifferent to the suffering of others.

As part of the Church’s response, Archbishop Garcera requested all dioceses and parishes to include a special Prayer of the Faithful during Masses next Sunday for earthquake victims, rescue personnel, and the recovery of affected communities.

He likewise appealed to bishops across the country to authorize a second collection during Sunday Masses on June 14.

Funds raised will be coursed through diocesan social action centers and Caritas Philippines to support emergency relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The CBCP statement comes as Church leaders and Catholic organizations continue to mobilize support for victims of the earthquake that struck Mindanao, prompting calls for prayer, solidarity, and humanitarian assistance from various sectors of the Church.

Archbishop Garcera concluded his message by entrusting the victims to the care of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying for comfort for those who mourn, healing for the injured, protection for those in danger, and strength for those providing aid.

“Let us continue to pray for one another and respond generously to this urgent call of Christian charity,” he said.
